What is Expense Ratio?

The expense ratio is the annual fee a fund charges, shown as a percentage of the money you have invested in it.

Why it matters

Fees come out of your returns every year, so over decades a low expense ratio can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. It is one of the few things investors control.
