What is Basis Point?
A basis point is one hundredth of one percentage point, or 0.01%. One hundred basis points equal one percentage point.
Why it matters
Basis points avoid confusion when talking about small changes. When the Federal Reserve moves rates by 25 basis points, that is 0.25 percentage points. Fund fees are also often quoted this way.
