Annual Percentage Yield (APY)

What is Annual Percentage Yield (APY)?

Annual percentage yield is the yearly return on a savings or deposit product including the effect of compounding. A higher compounding frequency gives a higher APY than the plain interest rate.

Why it matters

APY lets you compare savings accounts and CDs fairly. APR, by contrast, usually leaves compounding out, which is why a loan quotes APR and a savings account quotes APY.
