What is Alpha?
Alpha measures how much an investment or fund has returned above or below what its level of market risk would predict, usually compared with a benchmark index. Positive alpha means it did better than expected for its risk.
Why it matters
Alpha is how people judge whether a manager adds value beyond simply taking market risk. Most index funds aim for an alpha of about zero, and consistently high alpha is rare.
