Bid-Ask Spread

What is Bid-Ask Spread?

The bid-ask spread is the difference between the highest price a buyer will pay (the bid) and the lowest price a seller will accept (the ask).

Why it matters

A narrow spread usually signals a busy, liquid security. A wide spread is an extra cost, because you effectively buy at the higher price and sell at the lower one.
